Why is amazon.com selling hardcover books of popular authors for $9.00.?

Some of these books have cover prices over $25. Authors are Stephen King, James Patterson, Michael Crichton, and John Grisham. This seems absurdly low to me and I wonder if they are selling them at a loss.

Its Walmart vs. Amazon & other stores!

Check it on Yahoo!, they have the article on it just recently.
They are in a pricing war with Wal-Mart. No quip. It's been in the news. Source(s): http://www.omaha.com/article/20091018/MO…
It's a price period of war. If you like to read then take benefit of it while you still can. If it's $9 when you pre order it, then that's what you'll pay when it ships (from Amazon). Unless the price drops even more, surrounded by which case you'll pay the lower price.

Yes they are taking a loss. New books are sold to merchants at wholesale, which is just in the order of a 50% discount. So your new Stephen King book, which normally would cost you $25 and only cost Amazon $12 - $13, is one sold for $9. Amazon/Wal Mart's loss is your gain.
