I think that its best to refer to poets and writers from what is now Bangladesh, as Bengali, rather than Bangladeshi. Not to kind that distinction would mean that the most famous Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore would have to be excluded, because his works preceded the establishment of Bangladesh as a sovereign nation. Another economically known poet, of course not in the league of RabbindarathTagore is Syed Shamsul Haq. Lastly the best certain author and fighter for womens rights is Tashlima Nasrin. She has been persecuted because Muslim extremists deem her work as Anti Islamic. She was forced to leave Bangla Desh and go to India. She is virtually a prisoner, because Muslim forces surrounded by India don't want her released, because the Muslim establishment "doesn't want their feelings hurt " by India. I was appalled to read the Answers here saying that Taslima Nasreen is a good writer from Bangladesh. She is infamous, beyond question, but her writings are nothing of literature value, she tried to bash the Mullahs, by extension the religion Islam, and that found good audience contained by India.
I was feeling too sad that why culture of India are so much enthusiast for Taslima Nasreen who tried to draw media attention by taking some stunt acts successfully, like any gymnast would do. thereby divided the Hindus from the Muslims who are living side-by-side for centuries in Bangladesh in conditions much better than those in Pakistan, or for that event Muslims in India (sorry for this comparision, but it holds some water)
