That really depends on what it's supposed to be about. Most applications of literary criticism are to a specific text--in other words, do a formalist analysis of fertility symbols in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, or a Marxist analysis of the view of peasants surrounded by the same (defended mainly in their fantasy, and outside knowledge and research of the social structure of the time).
For formalist analysis, the text you are analyzing is really the only one typically used--you find what you entail in the structure and words of the work. For most other types (historicist, feminist, Marxist, etc.), you would use some outside sources to help defend and support your assertions on the substance and viewpoint of the author and the text.
