What do short, choppy sentences do/give to a book or story surrounded by language of atmosphere/vibe?

Aren't they usually used when describing something unpleasant, or something that goes by quick?
Answers:
I agree near Hug THE Tree.

Another example could be:
"He closed his eyes and prayed that when he opened them, they'd disappear. They didn't."
Hmm, yeah. I imagine so. I completely agree. Whenever I see sentences like that, I get the impression that the speaker is stressing something out. I guess sentences similar to that also make it seem like something's taking place quickly.
So, yeah, I think you're right about that.
Yes, they usually are to describe something unpleasant or rushed. That's the kind of vibe it give, a sense of urgency, whether it's unhappy, scary, or fast. Sometimes it's used to drop a orb on the reader, to expose someone. Such as:

"They were dark. Wearing a familiar blue coat. Tall. Lanky. Josh."

It may be a fruitless example, but I think you get the idea.

Sometimes period are used where commas otherwise would, and that often adds to the suspense.
