I want to be an editor but...?

I know almost nothing about being an editor. However, I am devout with grammar, I can pick out mistakes easily, I write occasionally, and reading is a favorite hobby of mine; but I do not know if my "skills" can put up with a job as rigorous as editing. I have also learned, from adjectives my researching on the internet, that editors do wayyy more than just edit. They also have to sermon to authors, answer emails (from whom though?), attend meetings, and write originally among many other responsibilities. I'm currently interested in man a novel/book editor (I don't know if that's the right term), but I don't know how I would start, what college classes to take, what place to apply to, how to "work-my-way-up", and whether I am creative enough to qualify. What other tasks do editors have to pocket on other than using the red pen?

(I am currently a sophomore in high college.)

Thank you!
Answers:
I'm a college senior set to graduate in December with a BA in English and I'm hoping to pursue editing (in the fiction pasture as well). If you plan to go to college and you attend a university that has a Creative Writing major, I'd do that (and possibly also an English lit major). CW majors do profusely more peer editing and therefore have more experience about the writing process, plus we swot up a lot about publishing. The best advice I can endow with you is get an internship. Network with writers and help them beside their work to get more experience with editing. Read a LOT. The blog someone mentioned is a good conception as well. Editing jobs in fiction are scarce right very soon - I'm having a lot of trouble. Hopefully by the time you get to this position, the post market's better. You're young, and you know what you want, which is a very good place to be surrounded by. Any opportunity you have to get publishing experience, take it.

If you want something smaller number conventional, I've got something you might be interested in. We have an interactive group of writers and we repress for each other. It's in the beginning stages, but we're hoping for it to become an public servant organization one day. If you'd like more info, consent to me know :)

Good luck!
I suggest looking on CareerCruising. (If you haven't already.)
Take as copious English classes possible to meet your goal!
Keep on practcing your skills, and constantly look for typos in books, and the Fourth Estate and signs.

I'm a sophomore , too.
Get an internship.

Create a blog as a book reviewer or intern with a book reviewer (they judge books, but also judge how it is written (grammar, spelling)
