How to augment my English vocabulary to be a devout writer?
I wan to a wide variety of words when writing a story. But as a non native English speaker I enjoy a limited vocabulary.
Could you suggest me ways to improve my vocabulary and how to find important words that writers use?
Any dictionary you's close to to suggest me?(Optional question)
THANKS A BUNCH!!
Answers:
get one of the copies of "improve ur vocabulary" by Norman Lewis. The book is of great relief.
It other helps to surround yourself with people that enjoy a broader lexicon. I have a fairly widespread vocabulary and have found that it is very useful to read frequently. It is also thoroughly useful to stop people when they use a word that you are not familiar next to, and ask them what it means. Most people do not mind because it makes it look resembling you are complimenting their intelligence.
Read voraciously! I am an American from birth; when I was a senior in high arts school, we took a national vocabulary test, and I scored in the ninety-ninth percentile -- which indicates that ninety-nine per cent of those who took the theory test scored lower than I did. There is only one reason for that accomplishment; from the moment that I could read, I begin reading everything in sight! I still do! The more that you read, the more proficient you will be in the English style, and the more evolved your vocabulary will become. I think that it's admirable that you aspire to improve yourself! Good luck!
Read abundantly of books, especially fiction. When you don't understand the meaning for a particular word, Refer a dictionary in need fail. I would recommend the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary. Work with the book 'Word Power made easy' by Norman Lewis. It helped me restore my language.
All the best!
The best way to learn more words is to read. Then, once you get a few up to date words started, use them whether in writing or speaking. It is not enough to learn the words, but you also entail to learn how they work and how to use them effectively. I would recommend reading some older books just because they tend to use different words than is regular now and they use them in a fluid way since it be in common usage then.
read a lot, understand n use.
