Answers:
Any by VC Andrews, my fave would be the Flowers in the Attic series.
I have three fiction books for you.
The Painted Bird - About a infantile boy who endures some very terrible things. I be never sure if this was meant to be a horror novel, but it be chilling to imagine what happened the boy and it have some very screwed up people in it. It is a pitch-black story though and the sad part is that it have really happen. Not suitable for children because of the mature themes.
Cruddy - this is written for a younger reader than Cruddy, but still deals near some horrible stuff. It follows a very screwed up young girl and all the really screwed up folks in her life. There is murder, stolen money, betrayal, and a sad coming of age story. There are occasional drawings contained by the desk and the writing is meant to be diary of the protagonist and narrator.
The Outsider - By the well set author Richard Wright, this book is considered classic. There are themes of racial identity, individual freedom versus collectivism, murder, love and the desire to escape from society's expectations/roles. Keep in mind that it be not written by a porn star and it is "serious" literature and not fluff, but it is a good read.
Any book on the goverment! They're adjectives pretty screwed up! Source(s): Me.

For fiction,

Gold by Dan Rhodes
"Fear and Loathing contained by Las Vegas" is a screwed-up classic, as is "Naked Lunch."
Many of Kurt Vonnegut's books feature tragic and miserable people. You might want to try "Dead Eye Dick," "Bluebeard" or "Slapstick."
Rule of The Bone by Russell Banks
Candy by Luke Davies
Small Town Punk by John Shepperd
Between the Bridge and the River by Craig Fergueson (ignore his quasi-fame)

the angel collector, i cant remember who it was by but it be scary! basically its about a man who kill all these pretty girls and keeps their heads and stuff to engineer the perfect angel and even takes his own daughter :p its really good
You could read "The Collector" by John Fowles. It's about a guy with obsessive issues kidnap a young woman. The book is more interresting as it presents the story from his point of view and from her point of view... and it's even not that gummy :D
Margaux with an X by Ron Koertge.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower is about a pretty sad boy/guy. I don't remember the author. But I am sure you can find it if you google it.
