I read a couple of books by Gemma Townley-- The Importance of Being Married and the other one be A Wild Affair (a series). She is similar to Sophie Kinsella in style. Jessica Wild tells a little white story to a friend and is caught up in making the lie come true contained by the first book, and in the second book a series of misunderstandings make for a funny book.
The other book I read was Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult. An Amish girl is on trial when her newborn is found unconscious.

Here are a couple I've read:
- The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. It’s in the order of a reality TV show where two people from respectively state, called ‘tributes,’ must go on this TV show and are made to kill the respectively other until one survivor is left. They are not allowed to bring anything with them, and must construct weapons by themselves out of the tress, rocks etc. They must learn to hide from others, camouflage themselves, hunt manic animals for food and kill the other people. The problem is, a main individuality, Peeter, is in love with one of the other girls who has be picked for the hunger games, and he does not want to kill her – he is madly in love near her, but she doesn’t know it. It’s an extremely gripping novel, and you see how people turn on each other for survival, and how they mask (they even climb trees and sleep in the branches to be away from other enemies). Here’s the blurb on the back of the book if you want to know more:
In a dark reverie of the near future, a terrifying realness tv show is taking place. Twelve boys and twelve girls are forced to appear in a live event called the Hunger Games. There is single one rule: kill or be killed. When sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen steps forward to take her sister’s place surrounded by the games, she sees it as a death sentence. But Katniss has be close to death before. For her, survival is second nature.
- Prey by Michael Crichton. Blurb on the fund of the book: In the Nevada desert, an experiment has gone horribly wrong. A cloud of nanoparticles—micro-robots—has escaped from the laboratory. This cloud is self-sustaining and self-reproducing. It is intelligent and learns from experience. For all practical purposes, it is alive.
It have been programmed as a predator. It is evolving swiftly, becoming more deadly with respectively passing hour.
Every attempt to destroy it has has-been.
And we are the prey.
As fresh as today's headlines, Michael Crichton's most compelling novel yet tell the story of a mechanical plague and the desperate efforts of a handful of scientists to stop it. Drawing on up-to-the-minute scientific certainty, Prey takes us into the emerging realms of nanotechnology and artificial distributed intelligence—in a story of breathtaking suspense. Prey is a novel you can't put down. Source(s): I've read them both and couldn't put them down!
I really don't know what kind of books you are into but I enjoyed the "Sword of truth" series by Terry Goodkind. This first book contained by the series is "Wizard's First Rule".
Here's The Summary:
In the aftermath of the brutal murder of his father, Richard Cypher encounters a mysterious woman, Kahlan Amnell, in his forest sanctuary. She seeks assistance... and more. His world, his very beliefs, are shattered when ancient debts come due with thundering violence.
In their darkest hour, Kahlan call upon Richard to reach beyond his sword-to invoke within himself something more noble. Neither know that the rules of battle have been changed... or that their time have run out.
This is the beginning. One book. One rule. Witness the birth of a legend.

It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini. Not exactly suspenseful in a mundane way, but I did sit down and read it in 3 hours because it was intriguing.
I agree with the other answer - The Red Necklace, by Sally Gardner, was a good book. Even if you're not really into historical fiction, it be a good, exciting read. :)
If you like sad books - 13 Reasons Why, by Jay Asher. It's give or take a few a boy who listens to these tapes that his crush recorded in the past she committed suicide. Another good one is Looking for Alaska, by John Green. This one's about a boy who starts going to a boarding school. It's funny and witty and low.
The Tiger Princess by Sarah Renee
It has animal characters but it has a lot of suspense and it really made me want to turn the subsequent page! I hope this helps!
A great read specifically popular is hunger games by suzanne collins. I enjoyed it from beginning to end. Imagine a world where on earth once a year a group of teenagers are forced into an arena where everyone kills each other to be the concluding one standing. Kill or be killed. Its fast pace from start to end and has suspense, romance, betrayal, and comedy
