How lots words are contained by a modern fiction original?
I am writing a novel. I am trying to make sure it is long enough. How oodles words do I need in order to attract publishers? How abundant is too many and how many is too little?
Answers:
It's always different depending on the book, but I'd voice about 165,000. It seems like abundantly of words but once you get started it's not as many as you think. But close to I said, it depends on the book because books, like people are never the same. I hope this help. :) Source(s): I'm a writer and the last book I had published was almost 165,000 words.
If you think the number of words is what's going to attract publishers, after ohhhh boy.
Step 1: go to the library
Step 2: look at the books
Notice how some are really big and some are really small? Just write it, if it works it works.
If want to get fussy nearly size, then write 50,000 with everyone for National Novel Writing Month http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node Source(s): http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node
The word count depends a lot on the genre of the book. Nearly adjectives books these days are at least 55,000 words.
Summarizing what agent Colleen Lindsay, blogging at http://theswivet.blogspot.com/2008/03/on… says something like word counts: It’s all about the genre, often the subgenre.
YA Fiction: 50,000 - 80,000 words, now and then 90,000
Urban Fantasy: 80,000 - 90,000
Paranormal Romance: 80,000 - 90,000
Mysteries and Crime Fiction:
--Cozies 60,000 - 70,000;
--all others 80,000 - 100,000
Science fiction and Fantasy: 100,000;
Epic Fantasy 120,000 - 130,000
Mainstream fiction depends on subgenre.
--Chick Lit 60,000 - 80,000;
--Literary Fiction up to 120,000 but lately trends to much shorter;
--Thrillers 90,000 - 100,000;
--Historical Fiction to 140,000.
Bear in mind that authors with a history of selling plenty get more page. For a first novel, the best way to determine how long your manuscript should be is to identify 5 novels contained by your genre, each the author's first. (If you’re smart, you’ll read them, too, so you’ll know what’s being published and how good your competition is.) Get the word count at Amazon, using deed stats. Average them, rounding to the closest 5,000 words. That's a reasonable goal length.
The standard cut-offs are:
Short Story: Up to 7,500 words.
Novelet: 7,501 to 17,000 words
Novella: 17,001 to 40,000 words
Short Novel: 40,001 to 60,000 words
Novels: 60,000 words onward.
Most contemporary novels run between 90,000 and 400,000 words.
