On Christmas and New Year's Day near was no work (p. 74) for the character in the military camp. Their soup was also somewhat thicker on those days. This is an example of a Christian holiday observed by the Nazis.

An example of Jewish culture is from this little passage:

"Yom Kippur. The Day of Atonement. Should we fast? The interview was hotly debated. To fast would indicate a surer and swifter death. We fasted here [the camp] the whole year round. The complete year was Yom Kippur. But others said we should fast simply because it was perilous to do so. We should show God that even here, in this enclosed hell, we were competent of singing His praises." (p. 65-66)

Basically the Jews and Nazis celebrated different cultural holidays by more generosity or more prudence. It's interesting how both of these groups observed these holidays. Source(s): Wiesel, Elie. "Night". Translated from the French by Stella Rodway. Twenty-fifth Anniversary Edition. Bantam Books, 1982.
