Who are some hypocrites within the novella Maggie: A Girl of the Streets and why?

Answers:
Everyone is a hypocrite. Father tries to instill values onto the children, even though he is a brutal drunk. Mother calls maggie a whore and refuses to allow her back into the house and when maggie dies the mother ironically states that she will forgive her child (even though it is mother who requirements the forgiving). Brother calls maggie "ruined" because whe slept with his friend pete, even though he himself has taken the chastity of heaps a young girl. Pete swears eternal devotion, plucks maggie's virginity away, then dumps her because of her low status, but then without hesitation goes to hook up with random floozies within the local tavern. As for your question "why," it is because Crane writes unabashed, scathing realism. That's how family are: hypocritical, sanctimonious, selfish bastards. This book was so realistic surrounded by its judgement of people that it was banned for a while, because nobody requests to hear the ugly truth.
