Why don't we know any of the authors of Anglo Saxon literature?
It's one of the questions on my English test.
I know they are anonymous, except for a few, but why exactly?
We never discussed why just that they are, that's why I'm have trouble.

many of the stories were passed down by word of mouth because there be not a formal system of writing at that time. It was monks who finally wrote down many of the stories, and I assume they didn't put themselves as authors because it wasn't really their story, they were purely copying it down.
