Anyone reccommend any well brought-up short stories/books?
I like fiction works, usually published by American authors like John Steinbeck. My favorite book is "The Pastures of Heaven" by John Steinbeck. I like to read short stories, since my vivacity is really hectic and I don't have much time to delve into a novel. Any suggestions?
Answers:
Well, "Animal Farm" by George Orwell would be the perfect choice for you. Trust me, you'll love it.
"The Ponder Heart" by Eudora Welty, a charming American writer, is delightful and not too, too long. It's really not Steinbeck, but it is interesting, and looks closely -- in need too much probing or analysis, just ironic observation -- at life within a small Southern town. (Her autobiography, "One Writer's Beginnings" is also good, though not fiction. If you like any of her fiction, you will adore her memoir.) I've never even heard of "Pastures of Heaven," by the style. I think I'll get it from the library!! This is a great question. I'm really looking forward to reading the other answers!
If you haven't read "The DaVinci Code" by Dan Brown, I'd recommend it to anyone who like a great mystery/thriller. Alas, it's a original, so it might not be your cup of tea.
Seriously, I couldn't put it down.
Also, if you like something a bit more controversial, I liked "god is not Great" by Hitchens. Very thought provoking.
Stephen King's
Lisey's Story and
Duma Key. <}:-})
Brett Harte is the most major American short story author. I also have a book called "The American Short Story" edited by Thomas K. Parkes that has assorted authors' short stories surrounded by it. Google it and/or get it at the library.
