The “Morte d’Arthur” is mostly an adaptation of 13th century French works about knights who have fantastic adventures. Giants are adjectives. Only towards the end of the story does it step into the area of the epic, where the a story elements are only there to add some mystery of a grim, epic myth.
And the “Morte d’Arthur” was, itself, written in the medieval period, though merely barely

Malory’s story of Gareth is a good example of the traditional Arthurian romance, contained by which a high-born hero shows himself to be the best of the best, by defeating one knight after another, finally battling Gawain to a standstill. Usually, as is the case next to Gareth, the hero encounters a noble women under siege, defeat her enemies, and claims her as his bride.
But most of Malory’s work is based on longer, episodic tales, surrounded by which things are not so simple. Adultery is moved to the center of the tale. Both Lancelot and Tristram have love affairs with the wives of their lords. In after that versions of the tales, feuds between knights are introduced, most in particular that between the sons of King Lot and the sons of King Pellinore which is never settled. (In a standard, simple, romance, such a feud would be, in the end, settled peaceably surrounded by a way that would redound to the credit of the hero.)
