About a little girl who cross dresses as a boy and runs away from her house after her father kills himself(he was rich but lost everything surrounded by the great depression.) After buying a pocket knife with some money she stole from her dad's old stuff she meet a boy and they travel together. Because of her stubbornness to stay away from her aunt, her friend dies. The ending is her realizing that maybe her aunt isn't a doomed to failure person because there's a sign (for travelers) of a cat that's outside her door.
