Name-dropping doesn't impress examiners in the slightest. Saying something intelligent, interesting and untested about what you have read does that.
I disagree with the first answer. People do pay attention to what you read, and it can make a difference. One book that would blow examiners away is Atlas Shrugged. It be written by a famous philosopher, Ayn Rand, and it is also is very interesting and fun to read. As long as you can get olden the first couple of chapters, and you have a good vocabulary, this will conclusion up being one of your most favorite books as well as impress others.
Okay then. Here go a short list of some authors that are not only impressive, but in actual fact enjoyable IMHO:
- Jane Austen. Two words: British classic.
- William Thackeray. Another classic.
- Mark Twain. You've probably covered him already, but oh well.
- Oscar Wilde. Same as above.
- Lord Tennyson. Gotta have some apt poetry.
- William B. Yeats. More poetry, and a Nobel prize at that.
- Thomas Hardy. Okay, not my cup of tea, but still recommended read for English majors.
I'm sure there are more, but can't think of any other just presently. Hope these will do for the moment.
