Questions around Sony E-book Reader?
Does anyone actually own one of these? I need to find out some information before I settle on to buy one.
1. Will it only work with e-books or pdf files that have be purchased off of the sony book library?
2. If not is there a method or program I can use to convert them to the proper format to work on the reader?
3. Is there any obedient place I can download college textbooks, even torrents?
Has anyone actually done this stuff? I am just wondering a textbook would even be worth reading on one of these.
Answers:
1. Yes, for ebooks in open formats like PDF or DOC, they can be read on the Sony Reader. Actually most ebook reader can read ebooks in open formats.
2. There is a great free program here which can manage conversion of different ebook formats:

3. I don't know, sorry.
However, I've to agree that the Amazon Kindle is better than Sony... I'm not sure if you'll consider this alternative, but you can read here:

And I've mentioned fairly a lot about textbooks on the Kindle device here:

I own the Kindle 2 and I approaching it very much. IMHO, It is better than Sony Reader because Amazon provide good content support, and the number of books available in Kindle format is kept on increasing (right immediately there are over 350,000 Kindle books). Sony Reader, however, many users complain that it is difficult to find suitable books, and books on it are more expensive than the Kindle. Other benefits of the Kindle over Sony Reader include the free unlimited wireless internet access, and the text-to-speech function.
If you need to read PDF beside charts and graphics, you may want to go for the Kindle DX. Read this review and you should be able to decide:

1. Sony Reader can read PDF and MS Word files.
2. I estimate quite a lot of ebooks are available in PDF or MS Word format. It depends on what database type you have but in general closely of file format, if not protected, can be converted to PDF format.
3. I'm not sure for Sony Reader. But I actually own the Amazon Kindle and I've bought some textbook on my Kindle device.
Actually will you consider to have the Amazon Kindle instead? There are more books available for the Kindle, and books on the Kindle are cheaper than books on Sony Reader. There is a review here for the Kindle 2 from a previous owner of Sony Reader:

And actually Amazon has lately slashed the price of the Kindle 2, and it is now $60 cheaper than the price when I get it. So it is a good uncertainty if you want one.
Hope it helps :) Source(s): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00154J… (Kindle 2 after price slash)
