"> Get the Sony eBook Reader 505 (read more just about it on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Reader)

The PRS-600 wasn't out when I got mine, but you might want to read the reviews and make sure there are no glower problems like the PRS-700

Get one in a darker colour (i.e. not a silver one nor the white Amazon Kindle) as copious people have complained about the street light reflection from reflective colours.

Sony PRS-505/LC (Blue is the dark blue)
Sony PRS-505/RC (Red is the dark red)

They stir for about USD 299 on amazon.com, between AUD 300 & 400 on ebay.com.au as new

I recommend buying the "Book Armor" case (about USD $29.95 on amazon and AUD 57 (incl.s&h) on ebay.com.au) as I've read just about a lot of people who have have the screen break from other objects in their bag.

You can also use this tool to download magazines, journals, journalists from the Internet at regular intervals.

You can then check this Australian web site listing Free (Public Domain) eBook sources on the Internet: http://www.e-book.com.au/freebooks.htm
or this earnings per book site: http://www.ebooks.com/

We bought two and we've been very happy beside them, especially as we travel a lot and have collected many eBooks surrounded by PDF and other formats over the years.
