Can e-readers (kindle etc) display pictures or diagrams etc ?
if you have a textbook with photos and diagrams can they be displayed? in B&W ? and primer in boxes/frames, or in the margins ?

I can only speak for the Kindle, but yes it can display photos and diagrams (in B+W). There are no margins to speak of, but you can write record and attach them to text.
I've the Kindle 2 and I like it awfully much. It can display pictures in black and white, and the quality is not bad. If you want to own textbooks on the Kindle, may be it is better to have the Kindle DX. There is an article here talking going on for picture / diagram display on the Kindle DX:
