Do Amazon ebooks work on systems excluding the Kindle?

I have a Sony portable reader. Can I buy ebooks for it on Amazon, or do such books only work for the Kindle.
Answers:
Unfortunately you can't. See here:

Amazon's ebooks only work on the Kindle, unless the DRM is cracked, which get into legality issues.

And more importantly--you can only *BUY* Amazon ebooks if you have a Kindle; they require the device reg in the past they'll sell you ebooks. This is a ridiculous business approach, since the Kindlebooks are just Mobipocket ebooks with a different considerate of DRM (the "lock" that prevents them from being read on unauthorized devices). They could offer them in Mobi format, which several kind of ebook readers use, but they don't want customers who haven't bought a Kindle.

You can't buy Amazon books for your Sony, but you can buy books from plenty of places other than the Sony store, and there are lots of free ebook sites as all right.

No you cannot. Actually stronger ebook support is the strength of Amazon over Sony, as you can see here:
