Here's a thead asking indistinguishable question, there's some interesting comments from Australian's trying to use Kindles...

From the Kindle FAQ:
"At this time, we are unable to offer the Amazon Kindle and associated digital content from the Kindle Store to our international customers due to import/export law and other restrictions. When you place your order for an Amazon Kindle, both the billing address for the payment method and the shipping address for the delivery must be recognizable by our systems as valid U.S. addresses. To successfully purchase digital content from the Amazon Kindle Store, the 1-Click payment method listed on the Manage Your Kindle page must be a credit or debit card issued by a U.S. Bank near a U.S. billing address. We value our international customers and hope to make Kindle available internationally in the adjectives."
well you can go on amazon and distribute them a request and ask.. I think so though because even if the kindle's (free no matter where you are) book server is solely in america you can access it through any location that has 3g, including australia (if it has 3g)
No, the Whispernet is only available in the United States. If you are in Australia, the best benefit of Kindle that it have wireless access everywhere vanishes. I'll suggest you to look into the Sony reader instead. Quite a lot of people close to it more for better PDF support. You can check out the customer review yourself:

BTW, if you want to buy the Kindle outside the United States, you need to find some one in US to help you buy it and ship to you, as Amazon website does not allow any buyers from outside the United States for the Kindle right in a minute.

Hope it helps.
I think so.
