Answers:
You'll have to buy every book, just like you buy actual books. But books on Kindle are cheaper than paperback performance. You can go and have a look for better idea:

However, Amazon does provide over 7000 Kindle books for free. They are contained by the public domain and you can see the list here:

You have to buy them, but they are generally cheaper than the printed newspaper.

For example, they aim to price *most* new hardbacks at $9.99 (which are normally $14.99 to $30 in print). And you can obtain a lot of older books or books in the public domain for dirt cheap. I get the entire collected works of Shakespeare, Mark Twain, Edgar Allen Poe, and H.G. Wells for $4.95 each. The other cool thing is that you can get specialty blogs deliver straight to the Kindle (usually for only $0.99 a month) and you can download free samples of books you are thinking of purchasing to see if you like the book earlier spending the money.
You have to buy the books...just as you would if you go to a bookstore and purchased them.
You get for free a message from the CEO, a dictionary that you can use while reading another book, and a user's guide. With the exception of special promotions and public domain books, everything else you will have to money for. There are cheap ones though. Here is some free ones currently avilable:

And these for under a buck.

To keep track of the latest deal, I suggest this blog.

I'm an avid reader, and I own the Kindle 2. Yes, you need to buy Kindle books. However, with the Kindle, it is said that on average if we buy 70 Kindle books, the price of the device is already covered. There is a review talking in the order of this in detail:

If you are considering to buy the Kindle 2, I'll suggest you to read the actual customer review on Amazon. It is the most informative place, and you should be able to make up your mind after reading one or two reviews in attendance:

Hope it helps.
You have to buy them. Get a library card, they're free!
