Kindle, How do you place a book on it? -- General answer, not steps?
For example, if I have a book in pdf form on my computer, will it be able to read it? Or, do I hold to buy a book in order to view it?
In other words, is it more similar to the music portion of an ipod (you can sync songs from your personal collection like CDs), or like the video/music portion (you have to buy it on itunes)?
And this is for Kindle 1 or 2
I hope that made sense, gratitude!
Answers:
If your book is surrounded by PDF format, you have to e-mail it to convert it to a format Kindle will recognize. However the conversion isn't really supported, and if you want it to go directly to your Kindle wirelessly, it will cost you a few cents. (Uploading it via USB is free) That said, the soon to be released DX edition is said to support PDFs natively. But, besides waiting for it, its bigger and more expensive!
Now the K2 does support other file formats: plain text, unprotected MOBI, and PRC. Source(s): http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Amazons-Wir…

I'll say it is like the music portion of an ipod. You can put the pdf you own on your computer to the Kindle, just that it wants to be of format supported by the Kindle. And this is for both Kindle 1 and Kindle 2.
If you are considering to buy one, I'll suggest you to read some actual customer review on Amazon to have your decision:

Hope it helps.
You can convert anything you owned with format supported by Kindle 2 (including PDF) to read inside the Kindle, and it can be free of charge. You say you don't want steps, so I just voice it in general (you can see full steps in Kindle 2 sale page). You can use your computer to send any file to Amazon email address then find the Kindle format back, and it will be readable in your Kindle. Right now Kindle supported formats are unprotected Microsoft Word, PDF, HTML, TXT, RTF, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, PRC and MOBI files. This works indistinguishable for both Kindle 1 and Kindle 2.
Of course, for books you don't originally own, you need to buy it.
Note that if you have more complex PDF, the Kindle 2 may not format it correctly. If you own complex PDF, and you can stand with the larger eyeshade size (which means bulkier) and the $130 extra cost, you can get the Kindle DX. Otherwise I think Kindle 2 is a tremendously good choice.
