Answers:
I own the Kindle 2 and I think it really worth the money. I like it very much because it is so convenient that I can bring my favorite books along next to me in the little device, and it helps utilizing my time. Now, I just use the Kindle to read some word or books whenever I've some spare time, like when I'm waiting for my friends, shuttle bus, etc. I like the text-to-speech especially, it allows me to "read" when I'm on the step machine... or anything else as it save my eyes and hands free.
The only way to put accounts you own on the Kindle is to scan them as images and copy them to the Kindle. If you want the Kindle version of the book, you need to buy them from Amazon. I do not do this, but a bit I'll buy books, newspapers, magazines that I do not own on the Kindle. If you like to read resembling I do, it can save quite a lot of money contained by long term because Kindle books are cheaper than the actual books. Here are some best sellers on the Kindle for you to check the price with:

BTW, I think you can only find the Sony Reader in Borders but not the Kindle. The Kindle is simply available in Amazon online store. I'll suggest you to get the Kindle rather than the Sony Reader. There is a flawless comparison here about this:

Hope it helps.
I'll say the best place to check is the actual customer review on Amazon. There are plenty of information in attendance from actual Kindle users and reading one or two of them should help you make up your decision:
