Kindle DX vs a laptop?
Why should i get a kindle over a laptop that costs just the same? ($450) can't they both read PDF?

I would get the laptop

and actually first performance a book wont kill you
Laptop u can have music, surf the web, download any software plausible
kindle you can- Read a virtual book

A laptop can categorically perform more functions, but still the Kindle can do something that the laptop cannot, like:
1. When I'm standing, like when I'm waiting at the bus stop, I can clutch the Kindle out for reading, but it is difficult for a laptop as it better has a table to hold it.
2. The Kindle DX has free sprint 3G internet access. It may or may not be the case for a laptop, depending on what service you join on to your laptop.
3. There are quite a lot of publishers publish their books only contained by Kindle format, it should be a business relation with Amazon. These cannot be read on a laptop
4. Same case for some newspaper and magazine, with subscription available for the Kindle but not a laptop
5. The Kindle does a much better job as a "mobile ebook reader", as it has a much longer mobile life. It can works from 4 days to up to 2 weeks without recharging.
So it adjectives depends on your need. If you want an ebook reader which is really "mobile", then the Kindle DX can definitely do a better living than a laptop.
