MEN! please respond!!I bumped into an ripened ex, how can I re-kindle a freindship?

I bumped into this guy that I dated for about a year, 2 weeks ago. I hadn't seen him in nearly 3 years. I sent him a message though Facebook recounting him he looked great, and it was nice to see him. He emailed me back very suddenly, and told me that i looked amazing, and that he had thought of me many times in these years, and that he have a premonition he would bump into me again at this event. However, he ended the email saying that he wished me all right...no hints to ever hanging out with me ever in his plans...or atleast this is how i took it...I want awfully badly to become friends with him (we did not part ways exceptionally nicely, i acted verrry badly, he dumped me) we have so much contained by common! anyway, I dont know if asking him out for coffee or something would be a bad idea!! pleas comfort! ANY advice?
