Kindle users - what convinced you to create the plunge?
Can you list the pros and cons of paying hundreds for a Kindle vs. buying and reading a book the old fashioned way?

I do not use the Kindle but rather use my Iphone Kindle app which be free and download ebooks for kindle to the iphone. I would not personally pay all that money for an E-book reader as it seem very pointless. You can easily get one and the same thing for your mobile phone or PC for free rather than a few hundered dollars, and get a free coverter to convert to the correct format display.
I have a Kindle and am a major book lover. I don't think the Kindle would replace books- at most minuscule not for me. One can get books for free from the library system and most library systems let a person request books ahead of time surrounded by a sort of queue arrangement.
But here are the pros of having a Kindle:
1) holds many books and weighs abundantly less than carrying a dozen books around such as some people (like me!) might do for a major trip somewhere.
2) Some culture (not me) don't like libraries and prefer to purchase books and purchase them brand new. A Kindle book price is cheaper than a hard cover book price and there's no shipping and handling. Many titles are available via Amazon Kindle.
3) the Classics are public domain and can be downloaded into a Kindle device even save through Amazon- and you can find free copies. In addition to Amazon's own software, Kindle supports mobi and txt files and some other ones. If the book you find is in PDF format, there are programs that will convert it to txt. I hold loaded a number of classics to my Kindle, free of charge. Doesn't take up any room at all.
4) Some libraries are starting to enjoy ebooks. I was told by mine that it wouldn't be compatible with a Kindle but would be with other ebook reader. However, some of that library's ebooks are in mobi format - which can be read in a Kindle-or in PDF which I can convert. Only downside- at least possible with my library- is that they have a limited number of ebooks at this point.
5) Kindles are massively user friendly. Easy to figure out how to use one even without the manual specifically contained in the Kindle's memory. It also has a built in dictionary. I a short time ago wish it had a backlight. You can change the font and it's drastically easy to read.
I think that for a real book lover, it's apposite as an additional thing. They are very expensive though. 389.00 (USD) for the regular one and 489.00 for the newer bigger one. But here are advantages to having one, particularly for those who like to read profusely of classics, or who like to travel or who tend to purchase books rather than borrow them from the library. I get the perception about just having it be a cellphone app, but you find a much smaller screen that way, I believe, and might not be as much fun to read it.
