i am considering buying a kindle but am a little concerned...i have a large library of serious newspaper books and am wondering if i could somehow transfer them to my kindle by use of a UPC or ISBN code? or do i have to buy them all agin specifically for my kindle?
Answers:
No, you have to buy books for your Kindle separately. That isn't a problem for me, I just refer to the physical books I own when I necessitate to find some data from them. If I really love the book a lot, I'll purchase another version for my Kindle.
I love my Kindle 2 thoroughly much. If you are thinking of buying one, I'll say get it and you won't regret. Since Amazon provide books for the Kindle cheaper than actual books, it has save me quite a lot of money. Right now I've read over 10 books near the Kindle, and I really like the idea that I can bring and store all paperwork with the handy device. Besides, it uses the e-ink technology, so even I read with the device for long hours, I don't feel tired. My individual complaint is the white case, right now all the Kindles are surrounded by white color... I think it will be cool if I can have a black or deep blue color Kindle ;)
I'll suggest you to read this review too, it outlines relatively a lot of benefits of the Kindle:

BTW, seems the Kindle 2 has only announced a price drop. Don't know if it is a temporary sale or a permanent cut, so I'll suggest to carry it fast. It is now under $300...

No, you can't. You must buy them all again. If I were you, I'll single buy new books to the Kindle, and just look back to the physical book library when you want to look for something. I guess as you draw from more and more books in your Kindle, you'll need less for your physical book library.
I'll suggest you to read this review, it is the best one I've ever read:

I'm sorry to read out that you cannot put the actual books you owned to your Kindle. Actually they are sold separately, if you buy both you'll own both. Just like buying a movie disc, if I bought a DVD version, I cannot get the blu-ray verison. Hope you apprehend what I mean. I am an avid reader and I own the Kindle 2, so I also have the same problem as you too ;)
I love my Kindle terribly much though. I think I've read over 20 books with my Kindle, no glitches so far! Since you're considering to buy it, let me distribute you some of my opinions.
I love my Kindle because it has helped me augment a lot on my efficiency and utilize my time. Before I owned the Kindle, waiting time like when I'm waiting for friends or waiting for shuttle bus or some entry like that is simply wasted. Now I purely need to bring the Kindle 2 along with me. Another thing I resembling the most is the text-to-speech function, which means I can "read" books without even holding or looking at the Kindle. Now I like to use this function when I've myself busy on some boring things, read out when I'm on the step machine or doing some housework...
I like reading and at the beginning I missed a bit on the intuition of reading books. But now I love to hold the Kindle, the e-ink seems to work very in good health, it is really like reading books... Now I often read with the Kindle for several hours but I don't surface tired... And now I prefer to keep and organize adjectives my books on my Kindle rather than organizing all the physical books, it is really much more convenient.
And a short time ago in case you don't know, Kindle books are cheaper than that of actual books, many unmarked books are sold at $9.99 or below. Amazon also provides quite a lot of free or very cheap books. I've previously bookmarked a correct article talking about this:
