The Amazon Kindle and the Sony Reader are the two best and most popular ebook readers. However, the Kindle is the best, and only the Kindle have the "read to me" option. Read here, it is a very good review on the "read to me" function of the Kindle 2:

Hope this help you making up the decision.
One alternative to the Amazon Kindle is the Sony Reader Digital Book, it's essentially the same thing. You can find out the price and info here: http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stor…

As for the Amazon Kindle you can find out more info on it here: http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Amazons-Wir…

Now, I'm not sure about the Sony reader but the Amazon Kindle does own a "Read-to-Me" feature which does what it say: reads stuff aloud, however this is lone if the book's rights holder has the feature available.

I own niether but the Amazon Kindle seems to be better as it allows for not a moment ago books but Newspapers and Magazines to be downloaded.

Good luck, and good reading.
The best alternative to Amazon Kindle is the Sony Reader, together with the Kindle they are the two most popular ebook readers right now. However, the Kindle is much better than Sony Reader within my opinion. You can read this review and see:

There is no popular reader other than the Kindle that has the "speaking option". The Sony Reader does not enjoy this function. Actually I like this function very much on my Kindle 2. You can read my another answer here for more about whether you should buy the Kindle:

There is the Sony Reader other than the Amazon Kindle. If you are in the United States, you should noticeably go for the Amazon Kindle (it is not yet available outside the U.S.)

You can read this review, from a person who be a fan of Sony Reader, and see why she goes to the Amazon Kindle:
