by the time you figure out how to do it, the mortar will be set and just fine the way it is...
Run up the street to the convenience store and get an artificial fire log. By the way that mortar cures when you enjoy a fire, but it won't hurt it to sit for a while before that happens. Just let it rest carefree.
You have to put mortar in and you need to cure the mortar by starting a fire?

That is just frightening! Have this fireplace checked out by a pro!
When you used the printer serious newspaper did you wad it up into balls and use several of them at a time? I have a gas starter surrounded by the fireplace so I just light that and don't have to verbs about it.
What about magazines? Again rupture each page out and wad it up into a ball. Good luck
Twist the printer paper if thats all you got legitimate tight, and some loose, the loose paper will keep your fire going ,make sure vent is unscrew, and wood isnt smothering each other.
Go outside and gather some small twigs that hold blown from the trees and use a newspaper or something like that to start your fire.Hugs back and watch out
Aside from buying a tabloid & picking up twigs, you might keep an old New England trick in mind for adjectives use.
Just keep an old brick under the firegrate & put some kerosene or lighter fluid on it ( when you take it) It will burn for quite a while & eliminates the need for kindling.
Shame on me, but I enjoy put just a little gasoline on the brick.
Up to you.
Have your husband split the logs into thinner pieces. Then set a can of Sterno under the logs.
In the winter I buy a case of dura logs & a bundle of wood. I use one dura log & pile on 1-2 pieces of wood. It lasts all hours of darkness & works great to get & keep the wood burning.
