What would be a suitable substitute to the Amazon.com Kindle?
My son is in high school in a minute and it turns out that all of his books are available on-line. Instead of him carrying 50 pounds of books around in a backpack I'd like to receive him something like the Kindle. I'd like for it to have long freestyle life so it could last all daylight in school and have a huge screen.
Any suggestions?

I think the Amazon Kindle suits your inevitability. There are Kindle 2 and Kindle DX now in the market, and Kindle DX should be better for you because it have larger screen (it has the largest screen among adjectives ebook readers available). There is a good comparison here between the two:

I'm a student and I own the Kindle too. I've put some of my textbooks on my Kindle device, so it saved me from carrying some hard to digest weights...
I'll suggest you to get the Kindle DX. It has a large peak which is suitable for reading textbooks, newspapers, magazines, etc. It have long battery life, for several days to 2 weeks on a single charge. It comes with free 3G internet access too, so you can access the internet near the device whenever needed.
