I don't think the Kindle 3 will come any time soon.
Don't wait for the Kindle 3... It must be next year. And truly it is really hard for the Kindle 2 to drop in price again, as it had already a price drop newly several weeks before.
Actually I recommend you to get it early so you can soak up its benefits earlier. There is a very good review here which outlines relatively a lot of benefits of the Kindle, and why it is worth especially at the end of the review:

I don't think the Kindle 2 will hold any further price drop this year. The new Kindle DX is just out three months ago, and the Kindle 2 just have a price slash recently. And you know, even for Kindle 1 which has launched for around 2 years, the used Kindle 1 is still selling at around $200, as you can see the inventory here:

So it doesn't seem to have room for the Kindle 2 to drop in price any further. For newer interpretation of the Kindle, it must be next year...
Actually after the price slash, the Kindle 2 is selling at $60 cheaper than the price that I got mine. So I think it is a honest chance if you want to get yours. May be you can read these reviews, they are those that I've read when I decided to grasp my Kindle:
