Answers:
The Kindle +1.
Read here for an excellent review which also mentions Sony Reader and iRex at the downfall:

You can choose a cover to protect the Kindle device:

For me, I'll choose this cover as it gives excellent protection:

Hope this helps you decide.
I'll utter the Kindle. You can find books for the Kindle cheaper than books on Sony Reader, so it makes quite a difference in long permanent status. Amazon also provide much better content support to their Kindle device, compared to Sony.
There is a good comparison here between the Kindle and Sony Reader:

I own the Kindle 2 and I like it very much. It have recently slashed in price, and it is now $60 cheaper than the price I get mine. So I do think it is a better buy right now.
Hope it helps :) Source(s): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00154J… (Kindle 2 after price slash)

I'll say the Kindle. Just read this review in the region of it, it is the best review I've ever read:

I hold the Sony Reader. I'd get the Kindle. First, the ability to download directly to the device. Second, there's a free Kindle app so you can read your books on your iPhone or iTouch. Third, I trust Amazon to support the Kindle. I don't have duplicate faith in Sony. Source(s): Sony Reader owner
The Kindle for sure. Read here from a person who had experience on both:

I have the Kindle and I similar to it. It is much better compared to Sony, as Amazon provide very good content for the Kindle. Right now in attendance are over 350,000 books on Kindle store, and the number of books is keep on increasing. Sony Reader, on the other hand, a lot of population complain it is difficult to find books they want, and books are more expensive compared to the Amazon Kindle. The Kindle also has completely free wireless internet access, and text-to-speech function. They are both great functions that the Sony Reader doesn't have.
If you need to read PDF beside complicated graphs or charts inside, you may want to choose the Kindle DX. This review should help you decide which one is better for you:
