Can a Kindle play movies and music as powerfully?
I am interested in buying a kindle but I was wondering if it will also play dvds and cds. Because if it doesn't I might as well dally until a new and improved kindle is released that does all that stuff too.
Answers:
It can play music but not video. The Amazon Kindle is designed for reading as largest purpose. If you like to read, then it is really worth to get it. But if you fundamentally want it for music and movie, I'll suggest you to go for the ipod.

I own the Kindle 2 and I resembling it very much. However, to be frank, if you expect to use it for entertainment you'll be disappointed because it isn't designed for that purpose. But if you like to read books, then you'll particularly like the device. Buying books on the Kindle is cheaper than buying extract books too, so may be it can save you some money in long residence for another device that can play movie.
BTW, I remember I read these reviews when I decided to get my Kindle:

AFAIK the kindle is black and white only...so probably not :p
Seems it can play music. But the main purpose for the Kindle is for reading books.
I suggest you to read here to see if the Kindle is what you want, it is the best review I've ever read:

The Kindle can play MP3 files, so you can use it to read books and play music at circumstance. It can't play movies, however.
I don't think ebook reader will be able to play DVD or CD any soon. It is completely different technology. One point is that all ebook readers now use e-ink technology, it doesn't enjoy backlight or color. It purpose to simulate reading experience on paper, so your eyes will not get tired for long hours of reading. If you read books (not watch movie which doesn't require staring at the screen) for long hours beside computer LCD screen, or any VCD/DVD player, you'll definitely get tired...
So my proposal is to get the Kindle and an additional device as VCD/DVD player. I recommend you to read this review about the Kindle too, it outlines relatively a lot of benefits of the Kindle, and why it is worth especially at the end of the review:

I'm extremely interested in getting a Kindle 2 (I've never owned an electronic reading device) but I'm worried about how long it will last.
