Let me try to answer your questions.

You are correct, you can buy or download books next to the Kindle 2, and the device can read the books to you. I tried gmail with my Kindle 2 and it works without problem.

Once you take the Kindle, you have to register it with an Amazon account. Any purchase on the Kindle device will be associated next to this Amazon account. The Kindle connects to Amazon Kindle store, and you can choose the books you want just by some clicks.

Here are adjectives the payment methods accepted by Amazon. Of course, credit card is the most convenient:

You'll be charged immediately once you buy books next to the Kindle device. If you use credit card, your credit card will be charged immediately. Though with the nature of credit card, you'll singular need to pay on the payment date of your credit card.

See the "Buying Content" division here to know everything about buying books on the Kindle:

Hope this helps.
